Initiation

Light and Sound Meditation is a path of direct inner experience. It is not based on imagination, belief, visualisation, or suggestion. The seeker opens inwardly and allows the inner Light and inner Sound to reveal themselves, if and when the time is right.

Traditionally, initiation into the inner Light and Sound was often conferred by a spiritual master. The master acted as a channel through which the higher energies could be transmitted to the seeker. In this way, the seeker was helped to move beyond ordinary meditation and into direct perception of the subtle inner energies of consciousness.

Today, this process may still take place through the help of an enlightened or advanced meditation teacher. It may also happen during a sincere period of inner opening, or through sitting at a time when spiritual energies are being offered more widely.

The purpose of this page is to explain the three main ways in which a seeker may open to receive initiation.

The Three Initiations

The traditional Light and Sound path speaks of three great initiations.

The first initiation opens the seeker to the inner Light and Sound. This may bring the first clear perception of subtle Light, inner Sound, or a deeper stillness within consciousness.

The second initiation deepens and stabilises the process. The Light and Sound become more central to the meditation, and the seeker is drawn further inward beyond the surface mind.

The third initiation is enlightenment. This is the profound awakening of consciousness beyond the separate self, into direct knowledge of the deeper reality of existence.

These stages are described more fully on the separate websites devoted to First Initiation, Second Initiation, and Enlightenment.

Opening to Receive

Initiation cannot be forced. It is not something the mind can manufacture. The seeker does not try to create Light, invent Sound, or imagine an experience.

The correct approach is simple, sincere, and open.

The seeker prepares the body, quietens the breath, uses a mantra if that feels appropriate, and then lets go. What follows is not controlled by the seeker. The inner process is allowed to unfold naturally.

Some may experience Light. Some may hear inner Sound. Some may feel stillness, expansion, vibration, peace, or a movement of energy. Others may feel very little at first. This does not mean nothing has happened. The path often opens quietly.

The important thing is not to chase an experience, but to become receptive.

Option One: Spontaneous Awakening

The first way to open to initiation is through a sincere personal sitting.

This can be done by anyone who feels drawn to the path. It requires no special belief, no ceremony, and no outer authority. The seeker simply prepares themselves inwardly and asks, with sincerity, to receive whatever is right for them.

A simple preparation may be as follows.

Begin with gentle stretching, so that the body is relaxed and comfortable. This is not physical exercise in the ordinary sense, but a way of releasing tension and allowing the body to settle.

Then bring attention to the breath. Let the breathing become calm, natural, and unforced. There is no need to control it too strongly. Simply allow the breath to become quieter.

If you use a mantra, repeat it gently within. The mantra should not be forced. It is used to gather the attention and help the mind become still.

Then let go.

Sit quietly. Do not strain. Do not expect. Do not try to make something happen. Simply open inwardly and allow the deeper process to unfold.

This may lead to a spontaneous awakening, or to the first movement of initiation. It may also prepare the ground for something that takes place later.

Option Two: Sitting During the Global Meditations

The second way is to follow the same preparation, but to sit at a time that coincides with the Global Meditations.

On the first day of each month, spiritual energy is offered to all sincere seekers who wish to open to the Light and Sound. Those who feel drawn to take part may sit quietly at the stated times and inwardly ask to receive whatever help, awakening, or initiation is appropriate.

The preparation is the same.

Begin with gentle stretching. Allow the body to become comfortable and settled.

Bring attention to the breath. Let the breathing become quiet and natural.

Use the mantra gently, if this is part of your practice.

Then let go.

During the sitting, simply open inwardly. There is no need to visualise anything. There is no need to imagine Light or Sound. There is no need to reach for an experience.

The seeker may inwardly ask to receive the Light and Sound, or to receive whatever energy is right for their spiritual development.

Then they sit in stillness and allow.

Some seekers may experience something immediately. Others may notice changes in the days or weeks that follow. The process is individual, and it is best approached with patience, humility, and trust.

Option Three: Help from an Advanced Meditation Teacher

The third way is to contact an advanced meditator or enlightened teacher who is able to help the seeker open to the Light and Sound.

This may be especially helpful for those who feel a strong inner calling, those who have already had unusual spiritual experiences, or those who are unsure how to proceed.

In this approach, the teacher does not give the seeker an imagined experience. The teacher acts as a channel for spiritual energy. Through the transference of energy, the seeker may be helped to open inwardly and become aware of the Light and Sound directly.

This is closer to the traditional approach, in which initiation was conferred by a spiritual master. The essential principle remains the same: the seeker opens, the teacher assists, and the higher energy does the work.

Those who feel drawn to this form of help may use the Contact page to make an enquiry.

What the Seeker Should Do

Whichever option is chosen, the inner attitude is the same.

Be sincere.

Be still.

Be open.

Do not force the mind.

Do not imagine an experience.

Do not judge the meditation by what happens in a single sitting.

The Light and Sound path is not a performance. It is not a test. It is an opening of consciousness.

The seeker’s part is to prepare, ask inwardly, and let go.

After a Sitting

After sitting, take a few moments before returning to normal activity. Let the body settle. Notice whether there has been any change in stillness, awareness, energy, Light, Sound, or inner peace.

It may be useful to make a brief note of anything significant, but there is no need to analyse the experience too much. Spiritual openings often become clearer over time.

If the experience is gentle, continue patiently.

If the experience is powerful, remain grounded. Eat, walk, rest, and allow the energies to settle naturally.

A Simple Invitation

If you feel drawn to the Light and Sound path, you may begin simply.

Sit quietly.

Prepare the body.

Calm the breath.

Use the mantra gently if you wish.

Then let go.

Ask inwardly to receive whatever is right for you: awakening, initiation, Light, Sound, guidance, or peace.

Then allow the process to unfold.

The path is not forced from below. It opens from above and within.

The seeker’s task is to become ready, receptive, and sincere.
